This walk alongside the Tongariro River includes a few gentle uphill climbs and stunning views. Enjoy a serene walk alongside the river, farmlands and through native bush. The path is shared with cyclists. As the river is home to the endangered whio, dogs need to be kept on a leash during whio nesting season (August to October). Dogs should be kept under control at all times. See more information about this walk here. There are toilets at some points along the route.

Loop track but the track can be started from multiple points making this a shorter track if preferred.

Difficulty level for humans accompanying dog:

Moderate. This track has a bit of elevation gain and part of the trail has a dedicated path. It is a longer track though at 13.2kms.
